The Need for Voltage Protection

In an era dominated by electronic devices, both in industrial and domestic settings, the stability of AC mains supply is paramount. Voltage fluctuations can wreak havoc on sensitive electronics, leading to potential damage or even device failure. This underscores the importance of an overvoltage and undervoltage protection system, designed to shield devices from these unpredictable changes in voltage.

How Does the Over Under Voltage Protection Work?

At the heart of the over voltage under voltage protection system is a meticulous monitoring mechanism. This system keeps a vigilant eye on the input voltage, ensuring it remains within a predefined range, often referred to as the “window range.”

The system employs a quad comparator IC, enhanced with two additional comparators, serving as window comparators. When the input voltage veers outside this window range, an error is triggered. This error, in turn, activates a relay, effectively cutting off the load and preventing any potential damage.

For demonstration purposes, our system uses a lamp as the load. Additionally, an alarm is integrated into the system, sounding off whenever a tripping event occurs, providing an audible alert of the voltage anomaly.

  • 555 IC: A versatile integrated circuit used for generating precise time delays and oscillations.

  • PCB and Breadboards: The foundational platforms on which the circuit is built.
  • LED: Provides visual indicators of the system’s status.
  • Transformer/Adapter: Facilitates the conversion of AC voltage from one level to another.
  • Push Buttons and Switch: User interface elements for system control.
  • Lamp: Serves as a demonstrative load for the system.
