INTRODUCTION OF DOMINOS

Henri Fayol 14 Principle Of Management with scalar chain, Firm Name - Dominos

Dominos Pizza, Inc, branded as Domino’s is an American multinational Pizza restaurant chain founded in 1960. The corporation is headquartered at the Domino’s Farms Office Park in Ann Arbor, Michigan, In 1960, Tom Monaghan and his brother, James took over the operation of a small pizza restaurant chain that had been owned by Dominick Divarti at 507 cross street ( now 301 west cross street) in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the deal was secured by a $500 down payment and the brothers borrowed $900 to pay for the store.

The brothers planned to spirit the work hours evenly, but James did not want to quit his job as a full-time postman to keep up with the demands of the new business. Within eight months, James traded his half of the business to Tom for the Volkswagen Beetle they used for pizza deliveries.

By 1965, Tom Monaghan has purchased two additional pizzerias, he now had a total of three locations in the same country. Monaghan wanted the stores to share the same branding but the original owner forbade him from using Domi Nick’s Name.

ABOUT HENRI FAYOL

Henri fayol 14 principle of management

Henri Fayol was a french mining engineer, mining executive author and director of mines who developed the general theory of business administration that is often called Fayolism. Henri fayol become known for his management principles, now a days the curriculums have henri fayol 14 principle of management as a important topic in any commerce subject.
BIRTH – 29th July 1841
DIED – 19th November 1925 Paris France
EDUCATION – Ecole national superior des mines de saint- efficiency (1860)
He and his colleagues developed this theory independently of scientific management but roughly contemporaneously. Henri Fayol in his book defined 14 key principles of management.

HENRI FAYOL 14 PRINCIPLE OF MANAGEMENT

  • DIVISION OF WORK
In practice, employees are specialized in different areas and they have different skills. Different levels of expertise can be distinguished within the knowledge areas(from generalist to specialist). Personal and professional developments support this. According to Henry Fayol specialization promotes the efficiency of the workforce and increases productivity. In addition, the specialization of the workforce increases their accuracy and speed.
    APPLICATION IN DOMINOS
Domino’s is based on a concept of discussion of work. It has a labour chart according to which positions have been assigned to every employee according to their capabilities. Those workers who are good at customer services are assigned as front staff and those who are good at making burgers and preparation.
  • AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITY
To get things done in an organization, management has the authority to give orders to the employees. Of course with this authority comes responsibility. According to Henri Fayol, the accompanying power or authority gives orders to the subordinates. The responsibility can be traced back from performance and it is, therefore, necessary to make agreements about this.
    APPLICATION IN DOMINOS
Dominos have very well used this principle of authority and responsibility, when a manager delegates his authority to any staff member to manage the from the counter and customer behaviour he gives a certain amount of responsibility as well so that workers can manage everything.
  • DISCIPLINE
This principle of the 14 principles of management is about obedience. It is often a part of the core values of a mission and vision in the form of good conduct and respectful interactions. This management principle is essential and is seen as the oil to make the engine of an organization run smoothly.
    APPLICATION IN DOMINOS
Changing the sanitisers after two hours washing hands after every hour, update fries time, this comes under discipline hour employees fulfil all these responsibilities, punctuality matters a lot at dominos and while serving the customer the employee must be very polite and kind to them.
  • UNITY OF COMMAND
The management principles ‘unity of command’ means that an individual employee should receive orders from one manager and that the employee is avail answerable to that manager. If tasks to the employee and related responsibilities are given to the employee by more than one manager, this may lead to confusion which may lead to possible conflicts for employees. By using this principle, the responsibility for mistakes can be established more easily.
    APPLICATION IN DOMINOS
According to my research, I have learnt that this principle is not equally applied at DOMINOS  because if there is more than one manager and therefore, the team members are getting commands from both of them but not at the same time.
  • UNITY OF DIRECTION
This management principle of the 14 principles of management is all about focus and unity. All employees deliver the same activities that can be linked to the same objectives. All activities must be carried out by one group that forms a team. These activities must be described in a plan of action. The manager is ultimately responsible for this plan and he monitors the progress of the defined and planned activities.
    APPLICATION IN DOMINOS
Domino’s is a food restaurant that aims to serve the customer at its best. Like unity of command, this principle is more applicable in big enterprises. The front staff which takes orders are directed by one manager and who their order and he’s the only one who instructs the team.
  • SUBORDINATION
There are always all kinds of interests in an organisation. To have an organization function well, Henri Fayol indicated that personal interests ate subordinate to the interest of the organization. The primary focus is on the organizational objectives and not those of the individual. This applies to all the levels of the entire organization, including the manager.
    APPLICATION IN MCD
Selfishness, laziness, and carelessness, was always the main issue in Domino’s have given a lot of benefits to their employees like 70% off on their meals free drinks, paid leave etc. so that they can feel more associated with the organization. But employees should also have faith in their organization and work for organisational benefits.
  • REMUNERATION
Motivation and productivity are close to one another as far as the smooth running of an organization is concerned. This management principle argues that the remuneration should be sufficient to keep employees motivated and productive. There are two types of remuneration namely non-monetary and monetary. Ultimately it’s about rewarding the effort that has been made.
    APPLICATION IN DOMINOS
Domino’s provide equal pay to their employees which is a pay rate according to it. And Domino’s also gives annual leaves to their employees, Ace and other medical benefits as well.
  • CENTRALISATION & DECENTRALISATION
Management and authority for the decision-making process must be properly balanced in an organization. This depends on the volume and size of an organization including its hierarchy. Centralized implies the concentration of decision making authority at the top management (executive board). Sharing of authority for the decision-making process with lower levels (middle and lower management), is referred to as decentralisation by Henri Fayol. Indicated that an organization should strive for a good balance in this.
    APPLICATIONS IN DOMINOS
Centralisation as well as an accurate amount of decentralisation is followed in Dominoes.
  • SCALAR CHAIN
Hierarchy presents itself in any given organization. This varies from senior management (executive board) to the lowest levels in the organization. Henri Fayol’s “Hierarchy” management principle states that there should be a clear line in the area of authority (from top to bottom and all managers at all levels). This can be seen as a type of management structure. Each employee can contact a manager or a superior in an emergency without challenging the hierarchy.
    APPLICATION IN DOMINOS
Information in burger king also follows the scalar chain. The employees can’t directly talk to the head office first they have to communicate with the assistant restaurant manager and then the manager, restaurant manager like this the scalar chain goes on. If employees have grievances they directly go to the shift manager.
  • ORDER
According to this principle of management, employees in an organization must have the right resources at their disposal so that they can function properly in an organization. In addition to social order (responsibility of the managers), the work environment must be safe, clean and tidy.
    APPLICATION IN DOMINOS
The principle is mostly used at Dominoes. Before doing all the preparation we need to put everything sorted in its place to avoid confusion in the end moment. Every day the workplace gets cleaned and workers change the pans for all the ingredients used.
  • EQUITY
The management principle of equity often occurs in the core values of an organization. According to Henri Fayol employees must be treated kindly and equally. Employees must be in the right place in the organization to do things right. Managers should supervise & monitor this process and they should treat employees fairly and impartially.
    APPLICATION IN DOMINOS
Domino’s treat its employees equally. No discrimination or racism is followed at the restaurant. Each employee has given the same respect and honours the grievances and problems are dealt with very nicely and effectively by the manager.
  • STABILITY OF PERSONNEL
This management principle of the 14 principles of management represents the deployment and managing of personnel and this should be in balance with the service that is provided by the organization. Management strives to minimize employee turnover and to have the right staff in the right place. Focus areas such as frequent change of position and sufficient development must be managed well.
    APPLICATION IN DOMINOS
Domino’s makes sure that the availability of the person whom the organisation is hiring is long. Otherwise, it will be a loss for the organisation to again organise the process of interview and training.
  • INITIATIVE
Henri Fayol agreed that with this management principle employees should be allowed to express new ideas. This encourages interest and involvement & creates added value for the company. Employee initiatives are a source of strength for the organization according to Henri Fayol. This encourages the employees to be involved and interested.
    APPLICATIONS IN DOMINOS
Domino’s understands the importance of employees hence the employees are equally given a chance to feel free to give any advice suggestions or change something about the strategy
  • ESPRIT DE CORPS
The management principle ‘esprit de corps’ of the 14 principles of management stands for striving for the involvement and unity of the employees managers are responsible for the development of morals in the area of communication. Esprit de corps contributes to the development of the culture and creates an atmosphere of mutual trust and understanding.
    APPLICATIONS IN DOMINOS
Coordination of kitchen staff, fire station staff and production staff helps front staff to feed the customers well. Without good and sound coordination, the best service cannot be given, hence orders get delayed dissatisfaction of customers and bad image of the organisation.

CONCLUSION

The henri fayol 14 principle of management can be used to manage organizations and are useful tools for forecasting planning, process management, organization, and control. Although they are obvious, many of these matters are still used based on common sense in current management practices in the organization. It remains a practical list with focus areas that are based on Henri Fayol’s research which still applies today due to several logical principles after studying all the henri fayol 14 principle of management and it is clear that my organization because it ensures the smooth running of an organization.
